When a new client came to me, tangled up in a web of small business marketing technology, I knew just the tool to kickstart our work together: Google Trends. As a small business owner, you might already know that the right keywords can make or break your online presence. But finding those golden SEO keywords? That’s another story. Thankfully, Google Trends is like a treasure map – you just need to know how to read it.
Discovering the Power of Google Trends
My client, a life coach looking to expand her online reach, was stuck in the usual SEO rut. She had a few keywords that worked okay, but nothing that truly moved the needle. That’s when we turned to Google Trends.
If you’ve never used it, Google Trends is a free tool that lets you see how often specific search terms are entered into Google over time. But the real magic happens in the “Related Queries” section. It’s like eavesdropping on the internet – you get to see what else people are searching for when they’re looking for your services.
For example, when we looked up her basic SEO keywords like “life coaching,” we found related queries like “mindfulness coaching” and “personal growth podcasts.” That was a lightbulb moment. My client was suddenly inspired to create a few new videos and articles focusing on these topics – content she never would have thought of without the help of Google Trends.

Creating Content That Speaks to Your Audience
Using those related queries, my client created videos on mindfulness coaching and blog posts about personal growth podcasts. The best part? Her new content was relevant and exactly what her target audience was searching for.
Google Trends not only helped her understand what her potential clients were interested in, but it also allowed her to create content that met those needs. And guess what? Her site traffic started climbing, and her videos got more views than ever before.
SEO Tools You Should Be Using (Besides Google Trends)
While Google Trends is an excellent starting point, it’s not the only tool in your SEO toolkit. Here are a few more must-haves:
- Google Search Console: This is a free service that helps you monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot your site's presence in Google Search results. It shows you which keywords are driving traffic to your site and where your site stands in search rankings.
- Moz Keyword Explorer: If you’re looking for a more in-depth analysis of potential keywords, Moz’s tool offers insights into keyword difficulty and the potential click-through rate.
- Ahrefs: This tool is excellent for understanding your competitors’ SEO strategies. With Ahrefs, you can see what keywords they’re ranking for, what content is performing best, and how you can outperform them.
